Two females died and one male subject was hospitalized, prompting a cocaine and fentanyl investigation by local and federal officials, according to information released by the Del Rio Police Department on Monday.
On Aug. 28, at approximately 9:36 p.m., the Del Rio Police Department Patrol Division was notified of a 911 call reporting several unresponsive individuals at an apartment in the 400 block of Ela Street, according to the information released.
Upon arrival, officers encountered several relatives and neighbors at the apartment complex. After entering into the apartment, officers discovered the two females and one male, all unresponsive. The man showed signs of life and was subsequently transported to Val Verde Regional Medical Center for further treatment by on-scene paramedics.
Officers observed suspected narcotics on a table and due to the potential hazard, the officers exited the apartment escorting family and friends that were at the apartment.
The DRPD Criminal Investigation Division responded and took over the investigation, while patrolmen maintained security of the outer perimeter of the scene. Laughlin Air Force Base Fire Department HAZMAT team was requested to assist at the scene. Firemen and detectives, wearing protective HAZMAT suits, entered the scene to continue the investigation.
Additional officers arrived on scene to assist with crowd control as family and friends wished to enter the apartment. Officers were able to disperse the crowd with no further incident and evacuated surrounding apartments due to the unknown potentially dangerous substance.
A sample of the substance located on the scene was tested by Homeland Security Investigations. Preliminary tests were positive for cocaine and showed traces of fentanyl. Additional samples of the substance were collected for laboratory testing.
The two females were subsequently pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Antonio Faz and were removed from the scene by Trinity Mortuary. Justice Faz ordered an autopsy for both deceased females. The male subject is still undergoing medical treatment.
The Del Rio Police Department is investigating in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration to find the source of these narcotics.
DRPD will continue to commit resources toward the investigation and arrests of offenders who manufacture, traffic, and distribute these deadly narcotics, the police department said.

Los oficiales pudieron dispersar a la multitud sin más incidente y evacuaron los apartamentos circundantes debido a la sustancia potencialmente peligrosa.
Investigaciones de Seguridad Nacional analizaron una muestra de la sustancia ubicada en la escena. Las pruebas preliminares dieron positivo para cocaína y mostraron rastros de fentanilo. Se recogieron muestras adicionales de la sustancia para pruebas de laboratorio.
Posteriormente, las dos mujeres fueron declaradas muertas por el Juez de Paz Antonio Faz y Trinity Mortuary retiró los cuerpos de la escena. El Juez Faz ordenó una autopsia para las dos mujeres fallecidas. El hombre aún está bajo tratamiento médico.
El Departamento de Policía de Del Río está investigando en conjunto con la Administración de Control de Drogas para encontrar la fuente de estos narcóticos.
DRPD continuará asignando recursos para la investigación y arrestos de delincuentes que fabrican, trafican y distribuyen estos narcóticos mortales, dijo el departamento de policía.
