Texas National Guard Spc. Bishop Evans, a field artilleryman from Arlington, Texas who went missing for three days near Eagle Pass before search crews found his body in the Rio Grande River on Apr. 25, was laid to rest Saturday, at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.
Evans, 22, was washed away after attempting to rescue two migrants who struggled as they tried to cross the river, state officials have said. He was assigned to Operation Lone Star, a Texas border initiative to deter illegal immigration.
Evans was one of more than 6,100 guard members stationed on the border as part of Republican Gov. Greg Abbott's massive border security mission.
Evans, who spent years living with his grandmother in Texas, also lived with his mother and stepfather in Alaska.
Evans served in Iraq and Kuwait. “He was always willing to help someone out,” Evans’ mother, Jwana Burnett, said of her son during the funeral service.
The Texas Military Department said the migrants Evans was trying to help “were involved in illicit transnational narcotics trafficking.” They’re now in custody.
The funeral service was held at the Koinonia Christian Church in Arlington, members of the North Texas Patriot Guard Riders led a procession to Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery following the service.
Evans joined the Texas Army National Guard in 2019. He went missing at about 9:45 a.m. on Apr. 22, and an official search for him began soon after.
Although Evans removed his body armor before entering the Rio Grande, he did not resurface. State officials have said that Evans did not have a flotation device when he entered the river.
The search for Evans included parties in boats and helicopters.
After joining the Texas Army National Guard, Evans served in Iraq and Kuwait under Operation Spartan Shield before returning to Texas in the fall of 2020.
Texas Rangers led the search for Evans, along with the Texas Department of Public Safety, Parks and Wildlife, and Border Patrol officials.
