DEL RIO – A suspicious vehicle and ensuing police chase sent Eagle Pass High School into a lockdown this Wednesday afternoon, after a report of armed suspects in a pickup truck traveling in the downtown area.

The chase ended up on Second Street, at the Eagle Pass High School entrance, where the Eagle Pass Police Department caught up with the suspects.

Eagle Pass ISD said that the decision to put the high school in a lockdown was due to safety procedures, following protocol, and that the vehicle never entered school grounds. The lockdown lasted about 30 minutes.

A Dodge pickup truck was seized, and five undocumented immigrants, as well as a suspected human smuggler were arrested and turned to the Border Patrol.

The automated cell phone system alerted parents about the lockdown, but following the arrest of the suspects classes and other school activities returned to normal.
