DEL RIO – Amid a string of stabbings in Del Rio, a new incident took place on Saturday, July 9, 2016, on Griner Street, where a woman was attacked when she was outside her residence. This incident is the seventh stabbing in Del Rio in just under a month.
The Del Rio Police Department is currently investigating this attack, which was reported at 10:08 p.m. at the 900 block of Griner Street.
A spokesman for the Del Rio Police Department said that the name of the victim is not being released at this time, and that the case is currently under investigation by the Criminal Investigations Division.
The only information available so far is that the victim was outside her residence with her dogs when she was attacked. She was later transported to the local hospital. It is believed that her injuries were not life-threatening. Her current condition is unknown.
This was the seventh in a rash of stabbings which started on June 12, 2016, with the only deadly occurrence so far. That day, Manuel Morales, Jr., 53-years-of-age, was attacked at the 7th Street Pub and later succumbed to his injuries in a local hospital.
Two suspects, brothers Mario Alberto Sanchez, 50, and Gustavo Sanchez, 46, were arrested the following day, and remain in jail facing murder charges in connection with Morales’ death.
On June 16, another notorious incident took place when Ricardo Flores, 37-years-of-age, and his common law spouse, both of Del Rio, were found with their throats slit. Both of them were treated and survived their injuries. Flores was arrested and charged with the assault on June 22, after being released from a hospital in San Antonio.
Investigators believe that Flores attacked his common law spouse, left her for dead and later he cut his own throat. Flores remains incarcerated at the Val Verde County corrections facility.
On June 25, 2016, Norma Jean Villanueva, 42-years-of-age, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after what is being investigated as a domestic disturbance. Leonar Alcala, 40-years-of-age, sustained injuries to his abdominal area and was taken to the local hospital. Police officers were called to the hospital.
According to police reports, the incident took place when the alleged victim and alleged attacker were attending a party at the 100 block of W Adobe Street.
Most recently, a new incident took place during the 4th of July celebration, where the sixth victim was attacked on July 5, 2016, just after midnight. The male victim was airlifted to San Antonio where he was being treated. His current condition is also unknown and the case remains under investigation by the Criminal Investigations Division.
