DEL RIO – January is School Board Recognition Month and San Felipe Del Rio CISD will join other districts across the state to thank our local leaders for their dedication and willingness to serve as advocates for our children and public schools.

“School board members serve countless hours working to make public education the best it can be for every child,” said Dr. Carlos Rios, SFDRCISD Superintendent. In a climate of change and challenge, they develop policies and make tough decisions on complex educational and social issues that affect the entire community and the lives of individual students. They bear responsibility and oversight in San Felipe Del Rio CISD for an annual budget of $120 million; nearly 10,600 students, in grades Pre-K to 12; more than 1,400 employees; and 16 campuses.

“Preparing today’s students to be productive citizens and the leaders of tomorrow is a tremendous task. As elected officials, school board members are the voice of their communities, serving first and foremost in the best interest of our schoolchildren,” explained Dr. Rios.

“We proudly salute these education advocates as they provide vision and leadership for student achievement, academic programs, district funding, and school facilities. Their service ensures that decisions about local public schools are made by those most familiar with the needs of our community’s children and families,” said Rios. “These dedicated individuals deserve recognition and thanks for their unfailing commitment to the continuing success of our students now and in the future,” he said. “One primary example of the major achievements the District has been able to accomplish under leadership of the SFDRCISD Board is the redesign of traditional high school education. Today, high school students have greater opportunities than ever before by choosing to attend either a non-traditional school at the Blended Academy; develop career pathways skillsets at the Gerardo J. Maldonado Career and Technical Education Center or attend the new SFDRCISD Early College High School”.

This year’s theme for School Board Appreciation Month is “Helping Kids Soar to Success”. The logo, created by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) depicts two kites soaring high indicating that the sky’s the limit when it comes to a child’s education. San Felipe Del Rio CISD’s Board of Trustees will be honored on Monday, January 22nd at the Student Performance Center and Administration Building with a Proclamation Ceremony and Reception at 5:30 p.m. followed by the annual School Board Appreciation Recognition by campus representatives. Parents and members of the community are welcomed to join the celebration and are encouraged to write “Thank You” notes to the members of the Board. These notes will be collected and placed on each members “kite” which will be presented to them that evening.

The men and women serving San Felipe Del Rio CISD are Mr. Joshua Overfelt, President; Mrs. Cecilia (Ceci) Martinez-Lozano, Vice-President; Ms. Amy Haynes, Secretary; Mr. Raymond Meza, board member; Mr. Roberto (Bob) Chavira, board member; Ms. Diana Gonzales, board member; and Mr. Ken Smith, board member.

Dr. Rios added, “Great leadership always begins with a willing heart, a positive attitude, and a desire to make a difference. Please join us as we applaud these local leaders for helping our kids soar to success.”
