DEL RIO – When Javier A. Martinez broke into the business as a radio broadcaster in his native Zaragoza, Mexico, he was just 16-years-old.

Since he moved to Del Rio 41 years ago, Martinez has branched out into television as a personality on KTRG channel 10, published a monthly magazine, the Texas Times; and is currently the host of Town Talk Live for KWMC 1490 Del Rio radio since 1997.

How did you get into your radio career and have managed to last so long in the business?

“I started in Zaragoza Coahuila in 1962.” “The first time I talked on the microphone was when I did a baseball game that was played in a vacant lot because we didn’t have any kind of sports complex,” said Martinez. “Later I had a radio sports program on XCZR in Zaragoza.”

Before Javier arrived in Del Rio in 1976, he worked at a radio station in Chicago where he was required to purchase one hour of program. “That’s we had to do back then is buy a radio spot so I could play the music I liked.” After that I started selling for a radio station and liked it so much that I’ve done it for years and am still here,” Martinez said.

Javier concluded his remarks, saying while he has been in the media business the past 50 years, he doesn’t consider it work. To him it’s been a great 25 years being with KWMC where he has met new people and made friends along the way.
