DEL RIO – Last year’s Holy Smoke BBQ Cook-Off & 5K Run was so popular, Efrain Gallegos and his St Joseph Catholic Church group decided to bring it back for its 2nd annual fall event.

“We are adding more events to this year’s Holy Smoke BBQ Cook-off with between 10-15 teams signed up for the co-ed kick-ball tournament, a two-man corn-hole tournament, a baking contest, etc,” said Gallegos, who is co-coordinator with Jim Wainer and a volunteer group comprised of about 20.

Also on tap is what 2,000 attendees are looking forward to—the BBQ Cook-off which will have categories of: BBQ, pork, spare ribs, chicken and brisket.

Cashes and prizes include: 1st through 10th in meat categories (entry fee of $175).

Prize money and buckle- grand champion $400

Prize money and buckle- reserve champion $250 

The 2nd Annual Holy Smoke Cook-off starts on Friday, September 22 with set-up at 10 a.m. On Saturday, September 23, it’s an all-day affair from 6 a.m.- closing time.

Friday night’s entertainment line-up has the Greg Allen Band from 10 p.m. – 1 a.m. The Holy Smoke Cook-off affair will be held at Val Verde Fairgrounds 2006 N. Main Street

As for why the Holy Smoke Cook-off was initiated, Gallegos stated.

“We started it last year not to raise money at the first but to help Sacred Heart improve their attendance on kids attending their school,” he said.

Gallegos who is a member of St. Joseph’s and his fellow brethren, decided to take it upon themselves to sponsor 10 kids get a Catholic education.
