DEL RIO,TX–Relay for life started with Dr. Gordon “Gordy” Klatt, who wanted to raise Cancer awareness, he decided to walk for 24 hours straight and he was able to raise some money from doing that. Other communities begin to do the same and this became the signature event for the American Cancer Society and they call it ‘Relay for Life’. Sharon Ansick, event lead commented about the Relay for Life coming to Del Rio in May.

“This event has been happening in Del Rio since 22 years ago, this is my 6th year as the event lead. This year it will be held on May 19th at the Del Rio Civic Center. We are planning on having the event from 6 pm to 6 am to represent the dark hours as the diagnosing of cancer and the dawn as the hope and the awakening of a new day, a new opportunity. People can do the relay individually or as a team. The cost to join per team is $25. We’ll also have a ceremony and a power point presentation in between the relay.

The American Cancer Society and its Relay for Life has got around the world in different countries. Cancer is everywhere and we must make awareness of that” commented Mrs. Ansick.
