DEL RIO – In the aftermath of a controversial meeting between Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, Democratic Candidate to the 23rd Congressional District of Texas, Pete Gallego, said that the construction of a border wall represents nothing but a waste of American taxpayers’ money.

Trump and Peña Nieto met on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 in Mexico City.

After the meeting with Peña Nieto, Trump read a statement declaring that he recognizes and respects “the right of either country to build a physical barrier or wall” along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Former congressman and current candidate Gallego responded to the statement by saying that the construction of a wall is not a matter of rights.

“America’s ‘right’ to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border isn’t in question. The government can do it, but that doesn’t make it a good idea. The wall would be a ‘huugge’ waste of taxpayer dollars, effort and time.”

Gallego went on to criticize Republican Congressman Will Hurd —his opponent in the November 8 election— comparing Hurd’s plans to those of Trump.

“Like Mr. Hurd’s plan to build three Homeland Security forward operating bases on the border in Big Bend National Park, Mr. Trump’s plan to build a physical wall on the border is bad public policy. Will Hurd is agonizing about being asked about Donald Trump because he and Donald Trump share so many similarities when it comes to the border.”
